My Vegan Journey 3

Why do you suppose that when I tell people I’m vegan they always ask me if I eat fish? Then when I reply; no I’m vegan, no animal products at all. They then ask; no chicken? Once again I reply no, no animal product at all. No fish, no poultry, no beef, pork, or dairy; plant based foods only. Then comes the protein question, you know how much I love that one. So the question I ask you is; why is this so hard to grasp?

A vegan is a vegetarian who eats plant products only. Someone who lives a true vegan lifestyle will not wear any clothing made from animal (fur, leather), or use product that test on animals, or are manufactured with animal parts in any way. I’m not quite there yet, but I am heading in that direction; for now I have the diet down.

Do you miss meat? There’s another question I get a lot. Not even a little; even before my switch to vegan I was never a big red meat eater. I would eat it occasionally (more in the summer, burger on the grill), but mostly I would eat chicken and fish; no I do not miss chicken or fish either. At first I missed sushi but that quickly went away. All I really miss is Turkey Hill Philadelphia style chocolate ice cream, but the coconut milk ice cream I eat makes me happy so I’m missing it less as time goes on.

You see the thing is, for every animal product I remove from my diet (and life for that matter) there is a plant based product to replace it, and the plant products taste just as good, better in some cases; so there’s really no reason to miss anything.

So here’s what I want you to do. Go to Whole Foods and buy a 4 pack of Field Roast apple sage vegan sausage. Then go to a local farmers market and buy peppers, 1 red, 1 yellow, 1 orange, 1 jalapeno, and 1 onion. Go home slice up the peppers and onions, and cut the sausage into approximately 2 inch pieces. Put some olive oil in a pan then add the peppers, cover and let cook for a few minutes. Then add the onion and sausage and season to taste with salt and pepper. Let it cook until the peppers are soft. Then either put that on a whole wheat pita or make brown rice and serve on a plate; sausage and peppers with a side of brown rice (that’s how I eat it). Now go into this with an open mind; no preconceived notions about how it will taste and tell me if there’s sausage missing.

So now I’ll turn the tables a little. Why are you still eating meat and dairy?
