Start Now

cropped-sab-jit2.jpgWell there’s one day left in 2012 and I guess all the resolution makers are hard at work coming up with their, ummmm, resolutions. I’ve said it in the past and I’ll say it again, resolutions don’t last, you have to make life changes. Change the things that are holding you back from reaching your goals whatever those goals may be. Not happy with your job? Change it. Not happy with your weight? Change it. Now I’m not saying you should walk into your boss’ office on Monday and quit, but what I am saying is you need to determine where it is you want to be, plot a course on how to get there, and get it in motion. I’m also saying you have to start NOW.
So let’s address the changing your weight issue. This is the one area where you have the ultimate control; you and only you determine what your body looks like. Now before you start to say you that you don’t eat that much and you’re doing everything right and not losing weight step back and take an honest look at what you are really eating and how much (or little) you’re exercising. Do not lie to yourself that your slow metabolism is at fault because once again, you control that. Do not blame your thyroid either, I know a guy whose thyroid is not functioning at all, for all intensive purposes it’s dead, through exercise and a good diet he is lean and in excellent condition, although he is always cold.
The most important part of this life change is dietary. You may think you’re eating well, and not eating too much, but if you keep a food diary and honestly write down everything you eat and by everything I mean every thing. You have to write what you ate and how much (weigh the portion of each food in the meal) food you ate. Write this info immediately, do not wait until you get home and settle in for the night and then write what you ate for the day because it will be inaccurate. I’m not saying you will intentionally underestimate what you’re eating, but you will underestimate what you are eating. Perform this exercise for 3 or 4 days and you’ll be surprised by the results.
Now that you’re armed with this new information on your food intake make the necessary changes. Remember a caloric deficit (expend more calories than you take in) will result in weight loss. This works all the time without fail, I guarantee it.
Diet alone is not enough for a permanent life change; you must add exercise as well. It does not have to be crazy high intensity exercise, a simple walk every night after diner, or early in the morning before you go to work. In addition to walking add in some weight training, just like the walking you don’t have to go crazy with a bodybuilding or power lifting program just some basic exercises to strengthen your muscles. Remember the more muscle you have the more fat you burn (control your metabolism) also lifting weights helps you with maintaining bone density.
Now I know it may seem like I’m over simplifying this, but I’m not, It’s that easy. All you need is the desire for change, and you and only you can make it happen. Do not make a New Years resolution, make a life change. O yeah and don’t wait until January 1st to start. START NOW……
